About A Friend In Hand

Book Direct with the Owner at A Friend In Hand in Glebe with Tourism Bookings WA for all your restaurant and entertainment needs.

Glebe's oldest hotel, The Friend In Hand Hotel is without a doubt, the best pub in Sydney!

Just a short walk down Cowper Street from Broadway and Glebe Pt Road, The Friend in Hand looks from the outside like many other Art-Deco era pubs … is hard to find but worth the effort! Step inside, though, and what you’re confronted with is something completely other… “More a Museum, than a pub”! nick-Knacks and memorabilia cram every available space through the front bar, from surf-skis to model aeroplanes and signs clearly lifted from medical establishments, photographs, oil paintings and oddments fill the entire bar. In the corner is a bird (not a 2 legged one) … It’s George the Sulphur crested Cockatoo who is the pubs PR Bird! George rules the roost at this backstreet Glebe pub.

When George isn’t waddling up and down the bar ruffling his feathers and cracking open lemon seeds or resting on the shoulders of the pub’s regulars, he’s got his own massive branch to perch on in the corner of the room. The Friend in Hand is the original Sydney bar – there are more taxidermied animal heads, old street signs and countless other bits of weirdness than you can point a stick at.
This one stop entertainment venue now boast …THE DARLEY STREET BISTRO…OPEN 7 DAYS 12noon till 9pm daily

Worth a visit! The food is your standard pub feed - the steaks were cooked perfectly and were great for $15. There are plenty of different beers on tap and a variety of wines to pick from. There is also a cute/quirky train track set up above you o the bistro side of the pub with a train driving around. Great little local pub!

It has a live cockatoo at the bar. Refresh of the chairs and tables downstairs gives you lots of nice seating options. Awesome pool room upstairs. Be warned, The darts board has been removed sadly to make way for a tv screen. Excellent list of traditional beers, no craft nonsense to be found here. This is an excellent old fashioned pub for the local ultimo crew, and I hope they don't change it much more. (For food, go grab Thai from long kin in pyrmont)

An iconic Sydney hotel with welcoming friendly and happy staff and a bigger than life personality George the cockatoo. The hotel itself has an extremely large collection of historic and quirky memorabilia that hours can be spent viewing while having one of Sydney's best tap beers. Although casual the place is cultured with poetry nights and a huge Achibald prize painting of Dough Mulray the iconic Sydney radio jock. This inviting historic local hotel also offers a great bistro lovely beer garden and great tab and gaming area as well as live music and raffles on Sundays. There is a fabulous area available for private functions as well as pool tables upstairs. The friend in hand is known around the world as a must do for travellers and back packers as it was the first hotel in Sydney to offer crab racing with a party atmosphere and a hell of a good night that needs to be experienced at least once ...a place that I would highly recommend...

Friendly ecclecticly cluttered pub with with live cockatoo to greet you near the door. Lots of mid week stuff to do like comedy on a Thursday, crab racing on a Wednesday poetry and art.
