One of Sydney's best kept secrets that's been around for years and still going strong. Fusion cuisine combining Japanese and brasserie style. Post-modern decor, friendly staff. The fried rice cakes are the best, and served as a basic entre on arrival. The sake is great too.
Grilled, fried, raw or steamed -- The Uchi team have every type of Japanese fusion cuisine covered. The beautifully presented restaurent has a small sake bar and offer over 10 sakes. Try one of their seasonal menus and enjoy the various small sized dishes by ordering a large quantity. Green bean ice-cream is simple , but always a favourite.
I last visited Uchi three years ago -- long before it was renovated. I have always enjoyed the cuisine. And, the green-tea creme brulee is to die for. Decent wine list, too. But, the service, which is very spotty, leaves a lot to be desired.
Miso eggplants are the usual stars of modern Japanese restaurants in Sydney. But Uchi Lounge's offering adds a twist that makes the experience a hit. Their Miso eggplant is topped with a crispy serving of parmesan cheese, which gives the dish a texture you won't easily forget. Most of the dishes served are substantial in size. Furnishings take a minimalist approach, which isn't a bad thing. The ambiance is family friendly but also worthy of an intimate date. There's banquets on offer as well as a sake tasting menu with delectable flavours like lychee, apple pie, green tea and even rhubarb. Situated off Oxford street, it's a great stop before a gig at Oxford Art Factory or even a night out dancing. Close to Central station, Museum Station and a short walk from bus stops along Oxford St, Uchi Lounge is an excellent choice for modern Japanese restaurants.
